Traditional Jewish Recipes

"Each community has its own traditional Jewish recipes. For some, traditional means rolling gefilte fish balls and cooking brisket, whilst for others it's about stuffing vegetables and preparing spicy fish."

Many of the traditional Jewish foods that spring to mind are in fact traditional to their native countries, from where they were adopted and adapted by Jews living in those countries.

Vegetable kugel
Traditional Ashkenazi food originated in the cold climes of Eastern Europe, and is often heavy. Very few vegetables grew there and many recipes are limited to potatoes, carrots, beetroot and cabbage, with very few herbs. As we become more health conscious these recipes are being adapted to incorporate more vegetables, herbs and spices and also make them with a lower and "healthier" fat content. Traditional ashkenazi foods are very high in carbohydrates; you can find low carbohydrate recipes here.

A traditional Ashkenazi meal may feature:
Home made challah

Gefilte fish

Chicken soup with kreplach

Stuffed roast chicken

Brisket

Kugel

Tzimmes

Jewish Apple Cake

Sephardi food is more Mediterranean in nature, and refers to food developed by Jews living in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Asia. There were more fruits and vegetables available, as well as herbs and as such food tends to be lighter.

A traditional meal may include:

Salads including hummus eggplant salad and chickpea salad

Stuffed vine leaves

Cous cous served with chicken or meat

Stuffed vegetables such as tomatoes

Eggplant dip is a traditional Sephardi appetizer
