Shavuot Recipes
Shavuot recipes are unique amongst the Jewish holiday recipes in that they feature milk and cheese.
Although Shavuot is one of the less well known Jewish holidays it celebrates the giving on the Torah on Mt Sinai. There are many suggestions given as to what the connection could be between Shavuot and dairy foods – perhaps because the alternate name for Mt Sinai sounds similar to the Hebrew word for cheese (gvina) or perhaps because the numerical equivalent of milk is 40 which is length of time Moses was on Mt. Sinai. No matter what the reason, it is almost universally accepted that Shavuot is a time to feast on dairy delights, and there are many dairy Shavuot recipes to be found here.
Some people have all their Shavuot meals dairy, other have 1 meal meaty and another dairy; others have their cheesecake before eating the meat meals. For those of us who love milk and cheeses this holiday is eagerly anticipated. It's hard to know quite where to begin with dairy recipes for Shavuot, creamy soups, lasagnas, pasta dishes, fish recipes, creamy desserts, buttery cookies and
squares
– it's all so different to the food we eat on the other Jewish holidays. Whilst I love the opportunity to make dairy dishes that I don't make very often during the rest of the year planning a menu can be more challenging on Shavuot. Various
menu suggestions
are presented here including an easy many and a low carbohydrate menu. For me the real challenge is how to limit myself to baking a reasonable number of dairy desserts!
